The cost of getting listed on a cloud marketplace depends on the vendor’s chosen pricing model. Many software packages in cloud marketplaces are free, and customers only pay the standard usage fees for their cloud resources.

If a vendor offers a virtual machine (VM) product, they can choose from different pricing models, including usage-based pricing or bring-your-own license (BYOL) pricing. If a vendor decides BYOL pricing, they must provide a way for customers to get a license, typically through a website. Google Cloud Marketplace asks that customers get the vendor’s license ID before deploying a BYOL product.

After the deployment, the vendor is responsible for validating the license ID entered by the partner. Google will bill the customer independently for infrastructure usage costs of running the product.
Some cloud marketplace products include services like Cloud Monitoring, which collects metrics, events, and metadata from the deployment. Customers who surpass the Cloud Monitoring free usage allotment will incur charges for its usage.

Regarding listing fees, cloud marketplaces charge a percentage of the revenue generated by the vendor’s product. In 2021, Microsoft and Google Cloud significantly reduced their listing fees, reducing them from previously substantial rates of up to 20% to a mere 3%.AWS, the market leader, charges a listing fee of about 5%. The prices are intended to offset the operational costs of invoicing and billing customers, and operating the marketplace, not to take a share of the vendor’s revenue.
